A Space for Artists Not Robots

So this lovely little golden nugget of a video just popped up in my heavily curated YouTube reccomended. Watch it for yourself before you continue reading. This is straight from the horse's mouth:

I made an account just as soon as I heard half of what this dude had to say about it! It's in open beta right now, but is already so wonderful. I love the design, the interface, the discovery and search system. It's still a little rudimentary, but extremely promising. Already I get more traction on there than X (twitter), Bluesky, Cara, and tumblr! No kidding! If you are an artist, please check it out and see for yourself!

No AI

No AI? No AI! Holy guacamole! Lemme tell you about how much I hate the way AI actually smashed artist visibility on platforms like X (twitter). My favorite kind of art is the spooky kind, horror, if you will. I love horror. I love dark, disturbing, gorey and grotesque glimpses into other people's twisted minds. It's rare to find a horror artist who actually ticks all those boxes, but they are out there. Usually considered "problematic" because their art disturbs the comforted. They lurk in shady corenrs. X (twitter) used to host some of those shady corners. You used to be able to search #horrorart and find some wacky shit (that's a compliment). Now? You search #literallyanthingwitharttackedontheend and it's nothing but the most uninspired, uninteresting, sanitized, glossy, ugly, uncreative, AI slop you can imagine.

So yeah, it fucked the search on X (twitter) harder than the search on X (twitter) already fucked itself. And was I upset that my art got crushed in the crossfire? Of course. But I'm even more upset that I literally can't discover other lesser known artists on there at all. It's nearly impossible. Goodluck. Especially if you're looking for the crazy rejects (affectionate) such as myself. I did find (rather they found me) two lovely artist on X (twitter) though, so I don't regret posting my work on there.

Purely Human doesn't have this problem. Its mission statement is against AI 100%.

No NSFW

I know, I know, calm your tits, calm your dicks. No NSFW is allowed (currently) on Purely Human and--now hear me out--I think that's a good thing. The thing with NSFW art on art platforms is it often overshadows SFW art. People just looking to get off (no shame, I get it) flood the zietgheist and artifically boost NSFW above SFW art because it gives them that dopamine hit (and orgasm). I believe NSFW art has it's place, I just don't know if it should share a space with it's SFW cousin.

Let me give an example of what I mean: Newgrounds. Newgrounds hosts SFW art alongside NSWF art. It always has. This used to work when everything on Newgrounds was edgy and even the "SFW" stuff was "SFW" the same way South Park is "SFW". Just silly enough to get away with it, but obviously very "obscene" (affectionate) by most standards. Now, in recent years, due to a change in internet culture, Newgrounds (for some ungodly reason) is trying to clean up their image. Why? Patreon. Tom Fulp can't make money on Patreon if Newgrounds were still itself. So he hollowed it out into an empty shell. Now the empty shell hosts SFW art that belongs on Cartoon Network alongside graphic NSFW of characters from Cartoon Network. It's . . . not so good.

NSFW art on Newgrounds gets (I'm guesstimating here and speaking from experience) 2X the amount of traction as SFW art, regardless of quality.

By Artists For Artists

Perhaps the most promising thing about Purely Human is that it is by artists for artists. Not a businessman, not some uninspired shmuck, but an indie game dev! Indie game devs have been and are at the forefront of artistic evolution this decade. I'm so excited to see them dipping their toes into webdev while they're at it. A worthy side-quest.

If you love art for the sake of art, and you love discovering new, unique, and underrated artists, then I urge you to make an account on Purely Human. The more users they get, the better. Throw your hat in the ring! We have to band together around these sorts of inovations if we really want to push the internet out of the hands of evil corporations, and back into the hands of the public.

Going Forawrd

As someone who does draw gore from time to time, I wouldn't mind it being allowed in the future, with a proper flagging system of course. One that works similar to Pixiv's would be nice. Though if they never do allow it I'd completely understand. I am also hoping they could impliment moving GIFs and APNGs in the near future. It'd be very nice for animators then, and animators are very homeless these days. Either way, I'm excited to see where this nifty little porject goes, and am wishing the developers the best! ピュアリー・ヒューマンは頑張ってね!
