Menhera(メンヘラ)Text Clique
While not well known in the west, and mischaracterized as a "dere," or something that only exists within anime, I've always had an affinity for the Japanese menhera subculture.
What Is Menhera(メンヘラ)?
Menhera(メンヘラ)is a Japanese fashion style and subculture which started on 2channel, AKA 2chan, the Japanese predecessor to 4chan. It was on the mental health board, where people (primarily women) were labled メンヘラ (short for "mentally ill") by other users outside of the mental health board. It's closest cousin in the English language, I'd say, is akin to "cringe," but with a stronger (or rather, more obvious) connotation surrounding mental illness. A literal translation of the word is "mental-healther."
Similar to the word jirai (地雷) in the jirai-kei (地雷系)subculture (literally meaning "landmine," as in, dating these women is like "stepping on a landmine"), to this day, in Japan, it is still used to insult women, and people in general, with mental illness.
But We're Here to Reclaim It!
As has been the effort in Japan, I seek to reclaim it in the English speaking world as well.
